As expected Brody was not too excited when we returned from vacation and I informed him that school would be starting in a few days. First grade would be his first time to stay anywhere all day and so it was a big adjustment. We went to Meet the Teacher night and I got really worried. Usually he enjoys this part of the "Back to School" process. But I couldn't get him to smile about anything.
He was at least polite to his teacher Mrs. McMurtry and introduced himself. She said she understood the lack of enthusiasm and I was surprised that there were a number of other things that weren't thrilled to be there either!
Then the big day came and there were some tears. He did not want to go! I explained that he could cry all he wanted at home and that it was ok to be sad and a little nervous, but that once we got to school we weren't going to cry anymore. It worked!
He walked into Rise and Shine, sat down, and didn't look back! And when I picked him up he said, "It was kinda fun". This transition hasn't been near as difficult as I anticipated. He absolutely loves school. We have been blessed by a wonderful teacher who I think makes each day fun and he loves all the extra stuff he gets to do at school (pe, longer recess, computers, music). He also has developed a crush on a little girl named Bailey. Supposedly she started it by poking him while they sit on the rug and when he turns around she either smiles at him or giggles. They play chase on the playground with a group of kids. It's so funny to hear him tell me all about his day!
I thought I would do a little update on what Brody is like at the beginning of first grade.......
He is such a sweet, thoughtful little guy. He still loves to cuddle with me and loves for me to lay on the couch with him. Here lately I have not been feeling the best and he always says, "I'm sorry you're not feeling good". The kid can eat. Sometimes it can be exhausting trying to keep his tummy full. He will eat almost anything I serve (within reason....he's still not going to eat any fruit but apples and vegetables consist of green beans, potatoes, and okra). His favorites are sausage balls, ice cream, pizza, chicken nuggets, and chips. He loves chips and thinks he should have chips everyday in his lunchbox. He likes playing tricks on me. He still loves to play with his toys. His favorites continue to be his cars, his car track, ninjago and power ranger people, his dress up stuff, and transformers. His favorite shows are Ninjago and Voltron Force. I am so thankful that he, for the most part, listens really well and doesn't get in trouble much. His favorite thing to do is be outside. He loves to shoot his bow and arrow, play basketball, football, and tennis, go for bike rides, and jump on the trampoline. He is much more interested in hunting and fishing and is eagerly awaiting his opportunity to hunt for anything this fall with Bryson. He can read, but he certainly doesn't love it. He does like when I read Magic Treehouse books with him at night before bed but him picking up a book and reading it would be the absolute last thing he would like to do. He still seems more interested in numbers and likes to count how many stairs he goes up and down, how many he seconds it takes to do something, and he likes to watch the clock and alert me of how many minutes is left until we are supposed to leave to arrive somewhere on time. He has a crazy memory and remembers details that I never even noticed. And he has an amazing sense of direction. If he has been somewhere once it is almost guaranteed that he can give you directions to get you back there. He loves to go, go, go and doesn't ever seem to tire down. He does like to lay on the couch for about an hour though when he gets home from school. Him and Meg continue to have a good relationship although he knows exactly how to push her buttons. He loves to tell her that we are going to leave her somewhere and then listen to her scream and cry. But he is a great big brother who looks out for her and will happily play polly pockets and Barbies with her if it means he gets to play with her. He always asks me to tell him who my favorite kid really is. He says, "I know its really me" and then he will give me all the reasons why he must be my favorite. I am thankful for my sweet little man. And like I have always told him, he is my favorite boy in the whole wide world!!!
