On April 1st of last year Meg had her second surgery to have tubes put in her ears and her adnoids removed. This helped so much with her ear infections and her sleeping. At her 6 week follow-up appointment the doctor noticed that her tonsils were really big. They had never been big until that day. And as time went on they got bigger and bigger. They were huge. The doctor suggested taking them out in the fall of last year but I wasn't 100% and decided to wait. This Spring I started noticing additional symptoms that had me concerned. Her snoring got horrible, she was waking up multiple times a night every single night, she was screaming in the middle of the night from having bad dreams, she was thrashing all around the bed and even fell out on multiple occasions including one time that left her with a black eye and a bloody nose! Her eating was terrible. Her pediatrician suggested we cut way back on chocolate milk and he assured us that this would increase her eating, but it didn't. And then a couple of months ago we were pretty sure she had developed sleep apnea. Even on nights that she got a good night of sleep she would be tired by 10:00 the next morning. In between snoring she started gasping for air. It was torturous to listen to and I felt so sorry for her. At the suggestion of her Nurse Practicioner we went to see her ENT, Dr. Moore, and he confirmed that her tonsils were now touching and we had waited long enough....they needed to come out!
Sleep Apnea makes you tired. Like sleeping on the floor of restaurants tired.
On picnic benches at the lake (Brody is not asleep. Meg really is)
In the middle of reading books at 6:00 at night. She slept through a number of t-ball games, church services, etc. You get the picture! So surgery day was June 28th. Brody went and stayed with Mimi so it was just the three of us that had to be at the hospital at 7:30! Meg did great getting checked in and never once asked for anything to eat or drink! We ran into Dr. Moore while we were getting checked in and made sure he was well rested and was going to take good care of our baby :)
Gran B kept us company while we waited for her to go back for surgery and then Mrs. Elizabeth from church made a surprise visit with Fur Real puppy for Meg and lots of snacks and magazines for us. The nurse came to get Meg and she willingly went with no tears. I was so thankful. We stayed busy chatting for 40 minutes and then I started to get anxious. She should've been done by then. Then Dr. Moore came in and said it all went great. No bleeding....no problems. And what he said that made me feel the best was that her tonsils were huge, completely touching and that we did the right thing. I had doubted myself so much and hated her doing the surgery. But I am glad we did it since she really needed it done!
We went down to see her in her hospital room and she was happy to see us! I took my position in bed next to her and that is where I stayed the majority of the time for the next 24 hours!
She wanted nothing to drink or eat until dinner time and this is what she did the majority of the afternoon! She slept for over 3 hours. I was so glad she was resting so much!
She slept through all of her visitors!
Finally she woke up and felt good enough to eat a little bit and she started drinking moore. We passed the rest of the time until bedtime doing some coloring, watching movies, reading books, and playing some games I had packed.
Loving her Fur Real pet
She slept pretty good that night. And we were up and ready to leave around 8:30. She loved this gigantic balloon that our friend Jill brought her.
Feeling much better!
She could barely fit in our car with all the balloons!
The last two weeks have certainly been a challenge! Her throat hurt really bad for the first week and she was a very unhappy camper a lot of the time. The second week got better and she started to sleep. She has slept through the night for the first time in almost a year and she has done it 5 nights in a row. This momma feels amazing getting a great night of sleep. Meg still isn't 100% herself but she is doing so much better. There is no more snoring, no sleep apnea, no screaming in the middle of the night, no falling out of bed or really even moving around in her bed, and her eating is slowly getting better! Hopefully another two weeks and she will be good as new!
